Manchester United’s signing of Nemanja Matic a ‘masterstroke’, says Bryan Robson
Manchester United’s signing of Nemanja Matic has been hailed as a “masterstroke” by former club captain Bryan Robson.
The Serbian international was signed from Chelsea in a £40m deal last month and has been an instant success as he quickly formed a formidable partnership with Paul Pogba at the heart of United’s midfield.
Both players were impressive during Sunday’s 4-0 victory over West Ham, with Pogba scoring and Matic winning man-of-the-match honours.
Robson, who was at United for 13 seasons, believes Matic was a shrewd addition by Jose Mourinho.
“To have signed Matic was a masterstroke for me,” Robson said, speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT.
“The signs there at the weekend were brilliant and I think he is going to be a great player for Manchester United over the next few years.”
Matic and Pogba were among five Mourinho signings in United’s side against West Ham, joining Romelu Lukaku, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly.
Those five players were part of an imposing spine for United and Robson believes the team is well poised to succeed in Mourinho’s second season in charge.
“You look at the squad in depth and we have got power and pace as well as the quality,” said Robson.
“We are going forward and we are going forward in a real good way.
“All of Mourinho’s signings have been very good and they have definitely strengthened us.
“Winning a couple of competitions last season gives the players loads of confidence and you can see the way they were bonding together on the tour to America that the lads get on really well together.
“There is a real good spirit amongst the players at this moment in time.”
